He was predeceased by : his parents, Lillie Mae Sweeney (Goings) and Nelson I. Sweeney Sr.; his wife Edna Mae Sweeney (Chambers); and his daughters, Edna Leigh O'Neal and Rene Stewart.

He is survived by : his children, Joyce Raum (Ronnie), Nelson I. Sweeney III (Dawn) and JoJo Aaron (late Tom); his brother Harvey Sweeney (Jeanette); his grandchildren, Tommy Jourdan, Rhett Raum, Rene Raum VanVeghten, Sidney O'Neal, Parker Aaron, Nelson "Eli" I. Sweeney, IV, Eric Sweeney, Callie Mae Sweeney, Michael Dreyer and Grace Dreyer; his great grandchildren, Stephanie Jourdan Thompson, Alexis Jourdan Soto, OuLi Jourdan, Molly VanVeghten, Gretchen VanVeghten, Sara O'Neal, Jackson O'Neal, Chloe O'Neal, Dutton Aaron, Nelson "Tyson" I. Sweeney, Axel Sweeney, Anna Sweeney and Erica Sweeney; and his great great grandchild Archie Thompson. He is also survived by friends and his son.
