He was predeceased by: his parents, Katherine Barber and Arch Cox McKay; and his wife Pamela Nevins McKay. He is survived by: his children, John McKay, Richard McKay and Melissa McKay Bode; his grandchildren, Skylar McKay, Madyson McKay, Ethan Ludwell McKay, Maxine McKay, Chase McKay Bode and Hannah Cecilia Bode; his great grandchildren, Elliot, Aurora and Anthony; his nephew Lud Thomas McKay of Tampa, Fla.; his siblings, C'Allen Chauvin of Louisville, Myra Case of Bardstown, Kitty Moore of Lexington, Arch Cox McKay Jr. of Bardstown and John Barber McKay of Nashville; and his brother-in-law Andy Moore of Lexington. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made in Commander McKay's honor to Pilots N Paws or Animal Warriors Conservation Society, organizations dedicated to the rescue and care of animals.
