He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph W. Smith Sr. and Leora Russell Smith; and his sisters, Mary Jane (Sheridan) and Lora Lee (Novak). He is survived by: his wife Joan Mary Hueske of Hastings; his children, Jeffrey of Grants, Scott of Westport, Connecticut and Susan of Cape Town; and his grandsons, Sean Smith of Philadelphia and Cole B Prowitt-Smith of Fairfield, Conn..
