Karen Deacon Obituary

Karen was born July 2, 1953 in Providence, Rhode Island. She attended The Lincoln for girls and summered in Matunuck, RI, where she loved to surf. She graduated in 1975 from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. This was the same year she moved to Florida and received her Master's degree (summa cum laud) in guidance and counseling at the University of Miami. We met in 1979 in West Palm Beach and married in1981 and we took our first cruise. It would certainly not be our last.

Karen could have been an architect. She designed and had our first house built in the Acreage in 1983. She could have been an engineer; there was nothing she couldn't assemble, nothing she could not fix. Thankfully she became a teacher and over a thirty year career, mostly at Wellington Elementary, she touched the lives of hundreds of children, many of whom still stay in touch via Facebook, etc.

Sometime in the early 2000's she got the travel bug. She researched and set up dozens of road trips, train trips, and cruises. We were able to see so much of this beautiful country. All planned by an expert (Karen). Next she set her sights on seeing the World by cruise ship. We went around the World many times and amassed nearly 4 years of sea days cruising the seven seas. The best part was Karen researched almost every port, decided what we wanted to see, reached out to local guides, and set up small excursions. My contribution was getting out of bed. How cool is that! Karen is survived by her siblings Jack McHenry of Viera, FL Jeanne Helma of Wakefield, RI and Hutchinsin Island, FL Steve McHenry of Park City, UT and Annie Cook of Charleston, RI.
