He was predeceased by: his parents, Willie Edward Smith and Madie Peacock Smith; his siblings, Clyde Smith, Doris Smith Whitaker and Ora Lee S. McCullough (Reno O. Smith); his daughter Sharon (Hammuwd); his granddaughter Khadijah (Hammuwd); and his close friend Alice (Worrell).
He is survived by: his children, James Edward Jr., Vanessa Renee Smith (Logan) and Tonya Smith; his grandchildren, Winfred Logan, Jr., Sakinah (Aaron), Aviance Smith, Rakeedah (Bell), Ja'Wanna (Logan), LaWanna (Logan) and Jadyn (Smith); his nieces, Lilly Hope Whitaker (Saulter), Oreno Faye Whitaker (Hooker) and Wanda McCullough (Simmons); and his nephew Kenneth Whitaker.
