“I knew Dr. Moates only by reputation though we did share same alma mater, Furman and a progressive side in the struggle for the soul of the Southern Baptist Convention. Our mutual friend John Pierce tells me today of his support for Baptists Today and Nurturing Faith. He understood and supported the work of the Baptist Joint Committee for Separation of Church and State and like Marshall Frady and Warren Fortson the larger picture for justice and political struggle in the public square.”
