He was predeceased by: his mother Elaine Whittle Hunter; and his brother Kent Hunter. He is survived by: his father Seamon Horace Hunter of Blythewood, SC; his wife Melissa Beth Smith of Athens, GA; his parents-in-law, Susan and Donald C. Smith; his brother Donald J. Smith; and his sister-in-law Heather Henderson.

Ernie became well-informed about the construction field, and was actively involved on the job site, supporting the crew with frequent meals and other needs during these difficult economic times caused by the pandemic.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Ernie Hunter Memorial Scholarship Fund, which supports worthy students at the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy.
