We are sad to announce that, on May 20, 2026, at the age of 95, Richard Thomas Hanlin (Athens, Georgia) passed away. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.
In the hush of twilight, as the stars twinkle in silent homage, we reflect on the legacy Richard leaves behind and his impact on the lives of his loved ones. Though Richard may no longer walk among us, his spirit lives on in the memories held dear by his family and friends, a guiding light that illuminates their paths in times of darkness.
He was predeceased by: his parents, Arthur McKinley Hanlin and Mary Elizabeth Hanlin (Hedges); his sister Nila Nichols; and his wife Elba Bueno Hanlin. He is survived by: his children, Maria Elena Hanlin of Fountain Hills, Arizona, Janath Ann Hanlin of Kauai, Hawaii and Richard Allen Hanlin (Lesley Foster Hanlin) of Jacksonville, Florida; and his close friend Maria C. Gonzalez of Mexico City. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Upon his retirement from the University of Georgia in 2001, Dr. Hanlin was awarded Professor Emeritus status in recognition of his distinguished career and lasting contributions to the field of mycology. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a children's charity, such as Operation Smile, HOPE, or Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
