Smith (David) of Columbia, SC, Lee Russell Troutman of Atlanta, Kathleen Carter (Travis) of Atlanta, Mary Turner Troutman of Atlanta, Lawson Harris (Allyson) of Atlanta and Isabelle Harris of Lakewood, CO.; and his great grandchildren, Eliana, Shiloh, Ruth Smith of Columbia, SC, Mary Emma and Troutman Carter of Atlanta.
After turning down a lucrative offer to be a salesman for the Jewell Tea Company, he earned a Ph.D. from Cornell University, at age 21, with the help of a National Science Foundation scholarship.
