He was predeceased by: his siblings, Rev. William H. Poe and Janie Jackson Poe; and his wife Gloria Reeves Poe (Black Ford Foundation). He is survived by: his siblings, Spurgeon and Cupid; his children, Janita Lorraine Poe and Brian David Poe; his sister-in-law Diana Poe of Nashville, Tennessee; his granddaughters, Ryann and Sydney Poe; his niece Laura Hand of Spartanburg, S. C.; Gerald Durley. He is also survived by relatives, friends.
It was also during his time at Tennessee State that he met the love of his life, Gloria America Reeves, among the first wave of Black Ford Foundation scholars across the United States.
