S Davenport wrote a sympathy message

“We feel so privileged to have met Gene and his family several times over the years. But, especially during Damascus Trail Days 2012 when Gene honored us by humbly agreeing to be Parade Marshall and, once again, signing his name to books he gifted to Gladys "next to the hostel" McNish in 1971. Our deepest sympathy to Eugenia and Jane. Hike on Dear Friend.”

“Eugenia, My love, thoughts and prayers are with you and the family in the loss of Gene. He was an inspiration to everyone who knew, loved and admired him. I will always remember the times at AFSP when Gene shared his AT hike. His gentle nature and humor were a blessing to everyone. I have shared his book with many and his legacy lives on! Love, peace and blessings, Kathy Hood (former president of Friends of Amicalola Falls State Park)”
