He was predeceased by: his father Earl Perry Mahaffey; his foster parents, Robert Hudson Monroe and Margaret Coker Monroe; his siblings, Grace M. Walters, Norah M. Gunderson, Lewis E. Mahaffey and Alvin J. Mahaffey; and his foster sisters, Dottie M. Elletson and Susan M. Renfrow.
He is survived by: his wife Nora Dean Padgett Mahaffey; his daughter Janet M. Christenbury; and his grandsons, Owen and Will Christenbury of Decatur, Georgia.. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
Dr. Mahaffey was affiliated with many professional organizations and received numerous awards for his contributions to education, including his being named the Outstanding Administrator in 1991 by the South Carolina Association of School Administrators.
