With sadness, we share the passing of Mason Phillip Johnson Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia. Mason, born on May 16, 1924, passed away on July 20, 2026. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.
He was predeceased by: his parents, Mason P. Johnson Sr. (Alice Scott Johnson) and Alice Scott Johnson; his children, Mason P. Johnson III and Evalyn Callier; and his siblings, Louise Delphine Deane and Ralph Johnson.
He is survived by: his wife Annie Marie Johnson; his daughters, Deborah, Michelle, Misha and Charmayne; his son-in-law Rogers Callier; and his brother-in-law Dr. Roosevelt Weaver (Mimi). He is also survived by grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins.
He continued performing professionally until age ninety-five, stopping only when the COVID-19 pandemic brought live performances to a halt.
His contributions to music education and the Beacon Hill community are preserved in a permanent Decatur museum exhibition recognizing his leadership of the Herring Street and Trinity High School bands and his service to generations of students.
