He was predeceased by: his parents, William Bacon and Louise Bacon; and his son William II. He is survived by: his wife Donna; his children, Tyra, Donna, Mary, Jesse, Louise, Jonathan and Nicholas; and his grandchildren, Bryce, Tierra, Kaya, Ajani, Kaleb, Sotiri, Amina and Amir.
As a Ford Foundation Scholar, he attended Morehouse College at the age of 15 and graduated in 1956 at the age of 19.
