He was predeceased by: his parents, Willie and Sendia. He is survived by: his wife Leola Bryant Hawes; his children, Marcell Brian Hawes and Melanie Jamila Hawes; his stepson James Boyd Nance Jr.; and his sisters, Ocie B. Webb, Annie Carolyn Lee, Juanita Hawes, Norma Jean Prince, Flora Hawes and Tracy Hawes. He is also survived by other relatives and friends.
