She was predeceased by : her parents, T. A. Gaines and Josephine Gaines; her husband Walt; and her son Walter "Buddy" Thomas Hughes III. She is survived by : her daughters, Cindy Hughes Ellis (Mike) and Melanie Hughes Arrington; her grandchildren, Louis Tjovaras, Troy Tjovaras, Nickie Reese, Chad Ellis, Brad Ellis, Ainsley Corley, Moriah Middlesteadt, Aimee Hughes, Thomas Hughes IV, Mary Grace Hughes and Benjamin Hughes; her siblings, Tom Gaines and Patricia Smith; and her niece Josie Morris. She is also survived by 17 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

A graveside service was held on Monday, April 8th 2024 at 1:00 PM at the Westover Memorial Park (2601 Wheeler Rd, Augusta, GA 30904).
