He was predeceased by : his parents, Earnie Courson and Faye Bennett Courson; his former life partner Iris Guy Courson; his son Michael Smart; and his siblings, E. L. Courson (Mary), Glenda Faye Batten and Pearl Murray (Cecil).

He is survived by : his wife Judy Freeman Smart Courson of Blackshear; his children, Tammy Williams (Mark) of Fernandina Beach, FL, Randy Courson (Debra) of Blackshear, Tony Courson (Pam) of Blackshear and Robert Smart (Susan) of Winter Haven, FL; his grandchildren, Chelsea Steverson of Waycross, Christopher Steverson (Abigail) of Waycross, Makayla Bennett (Tyler) of Douglas, Miranda Courson of Blackshear, Jackson Courson of Blackshear, Monica Bennett (Dustin) of Blackshear, Brittney Brunner of Blackshear, Marcia Williams of Lake City, FL and Brittney Gaskins (Rowland) of Macclenny, FL; his great grandchildren, Michael Henry Steverson, Rylynn Bennett, Cambri Bennett, Bryson Brunner, Madi Holland, Ryland Gaskins and Kai Gaskins; and his siblings-in-law, Dwain, Belinda Lewis of Blackshear, Tom, Eileen Freeman of St. Augustine and Barbara Freeman of Waycross. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews.
