He was predeceased by : his parents, William Robert Mathis and Atha Key Mathis; and his siblings, Bill Mathis, Earl Mathis, Vernon Mathis, Lillian Grizzle, Reece Mathis, Ed Mathis and J. R. Mathis.

He is survived by : his wife Louise Newman Mathis; his children, Barbara Chancey (Joe) of Blue Ridge, GA, Steve Mathis (Pam) of Blue Ridge, GA, Robby Mathis (Pam) of Mineral Bluff, GA and Kristi Mathis of Blue Ridge, GA; his sister Reathel Parks of Maryland, DC; his grandchildren, Little Joe Chancey (Courtney Woody), Chad Mathis (Lisa Taylor), Matt Chancey (Erin), Candace Welch (Derrick), Kelly Mathis, Kacey Davis (Will), Destiny Weeks and A. J. Weeks; and his great grandchildren, Colton Mathis, Morgan Chancey, Ryan Chancey and Reed Welch. He is also survived by numerous other relatives and friends.

Friends may visit at the funeral home after 9:00 a.m. on Friday, February 9, 2024, but the family will especially visit with friends between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church care of Danny McFarland at 2711 Ada Street, Blue Ridge, GA 30513.
