He was predeceased by: his parents, E. B. Thornton and Lela Ruth Harrison Thornton; his brothers, McCoy Thornton and Paul Thornton; and his stepgranddaughter Ashley Breigh Smith.
He is survived by: his wife Sharon Dianne Ploof Thornton; his daughter Lela Ruth Lucas of Florida; his stepchildren, Michelle Busbee and Allen Smith; and his sister Christina Cunningham of Florida. He is also survived by five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
