He was predeceased by: his mother Clara Clark Williams; and his brother Keith Williams. He is survived by: his close friends, Rip Abney and Paul Roberts; his wife Tiny Bates; his son Gregory Bates; and his brothers, Anthony (Audrey Williams), Randy (Sonya Williams) and Terry Shealy (Jane).

He was a member of the Elderly Gentlemen's Table at Hardee's and continued to keep up with his friends even during the pandemic.
