He was predeceased by: his parents, Howard Nichols and Marjorie Kirkland Nichols; and his niece Bree Grinstead. He is survived by: his wife Pamela Wilkinson of Buford, GA; his sons, Joseph Nichols of Buford, GA, John Acosta of Sugar Hill, GA and Nikolas Staples (Amanda) of Dacula, GA; his grandchildren, Cassidy Staples and Miles Staples; his brother Brett Nichols (Lynne) of Eustis, FL; and his brother-in-law Chuck Wilkinson of Sugar Hill, GA. He is also survived by Numerous other relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ALS Association of Georgia, in memory of Alan M. Nichols.
