He is survived by: his significant other Diane Koontz; his children, Andrea Benson (Eric), Zack Koontz, Nick Koontz (Nikki) and Natalie Koontz; his grandchildren, Cody, Olivia and Christopher Benson; his sister Cindy Karsten; his brother-in-law Lyle; and his pet Lucy. He is also survived by extended family and dear friends.

Visitation will be held on Friday, October 3rd 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Crowell Brothers Funeral Homes & Crematory (5051 Peachtree Industrial Blvd, Peachtree Corners, GA 30092). A celebration of life will be held on Friday, October 3rd 2025 from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the same location.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rainbow Village, https://rainbowvillage.org., or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, https://www.stjude.org., two causes close to the family's heart.

“Dear Diane and family, Richard was a special man, courageous with strength within I have not seen in my 55 years of nursing. He was always concerned when he texted me for a time he needed some help, concerned he may need to cancel. As Director of Nursing for Visiting Nurse Private Home Care we developed a bond, and he would share his pictures of his dog nurse Lucy. AND pictures with his long hair, short hair and no hair. I always called him Mr. Koontz, not Rich. Mr. Koontz I will miss you.”
