He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter M. Sumner and Illa Mae Parker Sumner. He is survived by: his wife Gayle Miller Sumner; his daughters, Susan Denise Sumner of Greensboro and Donna Kaye Sumner Price (Jason) of Newborn; his granddaughter Ashley Brown Barnes (John); and his great grandchild John Shepherd Barnes. He is also survived by many nephews and nieces.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Clayton Baptist Church, Berry College or the Parkinson's Foundation.
