He was predeceased by: his parents, Bert Higgenbotham and Lou Smith Payne; his son Brian Howell; his stepfather James Payne; and his grandparents, Sarah and Edgar Smith.

He is survived by: his wife Connie Kinney Payne; his daughter Brenda Glass; his granddaughters, Megan Clayton (Winston) and Cheryl Middleton (Derrick); his great grandchildren, Chase Ruff, Brody Glass, Brentley Glass, Brylee Glass, Annabelle Middleton, Donovan Clayton and Kolton Clayton; and his siblings, Bart Payne (Gertie), Jim Ed Payne (Judith) and Gidget Benefield (Tom).
