He was predeceased by: his wife Bette J. Holmes; his daughter Darlene Newman; his grandson Gene Holland; his parents, Wiley Holmes and Nannie Holmes; and his brother Jerry Holmes.

He is survived by: his children, Helen Hicks (Steve), Marjorie Holland, Thomas Andrew Cox (Rebecca), Deania Savala (Andy) and Joy Marnette Vaughn (Scott). He is also survived by twelve grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and many extended family.
