He was predeceased by: his parents, Reverend Roy L. Matthews and Carrie Dempsey Matthews; his siblings, Sandra Mauldin, Nora Merritt, Paul Matthews, Muril Matthews, Arnold Matthews and Hal Matthews; and his pet Harley.
He is survived by: his daughters, Olivia Cornwell (Jared) and Cassie Matthews; and his grandchildren, Ryan Cornwell, Rhett Cornwell and Renley Cornwell. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to the Polk County Animal Shelter.
