He was predeceased by : his parents, Neil DeFriese and Faye Brady DeFriese; his siblings, Onolee Boyd and Neil "Spanky" DeFriese; and his son Michael DeFriese.

He is survived by : his daughter Michelle "Missy" Smith (Ron); his sisters, Dorinda Eldridge (CL), Leanna Rogers and Donna Kirby; and his grandson Chris Smith (Ashley). He is also survived by nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Elaine Huckabee wrote a sympathy message

“I am sincerely heartbroken over Bob's passing. I visited with him the Sunday before he passed. He was always so very kind to me. He would always let me go fishing and loved to watch me out fish the guys. I loved visiting with him and would bring him homemade banana nut muffins that he loved. He will be Greatly missed. He was a good friend. Sending prayers to the family and friends.”
