He was predeceased by: his parents, Vick Cowart and Paralee Cowart; and his sisters, Virginia London, Martha London, Marie Allen and Ellen Franklin.
He is survived by: his wife Willie Sue Brown Cowart; his son Jeff; his daughter-in-law Johnnie Cowart; his daughter Leslie Hughes; his grandchildren, Jessica, Stanley Dodd, Susie, Will Jackson, Priscilla, James Reagin, T. J., Allison Cowart, Courtney Elliott, Aaron Rogers, Christy and Reid Watson; his great grandchildren, Sage Reagin, Jame Reagin IV, Bo Dodd, Ella Cowart, Alayna Cowart, Mae Dodd, Ava Jackson, Nora Jean Cowart and Charlee Watson; his sisters, Barbara Thurmond, Janie Blackburn and Cheryl Mize; and his brother-in-law James Brown.
