He was predeceased by: his parents, Ernest Cowart and Jennie Cowart; his siblings, Ernestine Oliver, Herbert Cowart, Eva Lee Alston, Harris Cowart, Ted Cowart and Louise Thurmond; and his son Mark Cowart.

He is survived by: his sons, Don Cowart (Nancy) of Cobbtown and Eric Cowart (Tracy) of Collins; his granddaughters, Ashton Cowart of Rincon and Ashley Pittman (Andrew) of Glennville; and his great grandchildren, Braelynn Pittman, Emerson Pittman and McKenna Pittman of Glennville.

In lieu of flowers the family is asking that donations be made to the Pine Grove Baptist Church Building Fund at Post Office Box 735, Reidsville, Georgia 30453.
