He was predeceased by: his parents, Pauline White and Eugene Barnes; and his siblings, Pauline "Sweetie" Campbell and Paul Barnes. He is survived by: his wife Jannie Mae Barnes; and his children, Cheryl, Clairmont (Colleen), Simi, Mary (Kennan), Robbi, Carla (Jeff), Phydellis (Veronica) and Bruce. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren, andu nineteen great-grandchildren.

“My deepest condolences to the family and all that knew Mr. "Pops" Barnes. Mr. Barnes became acquainted when I was helping my sister with a paper for one of her college classes and needed to interview a prominent city leader. I texted Pops at 4:30a, thinking I'd hear from him a few hours later, but to my surprise, he immediately replied to my text and said I could call him right then. We talked about an hour, and I will always remember how cool and nice he was. RIP Mr. Pops”
