We announce the death of Jerry Wayne Oates of Columbus, Georgia, who passed away on September 4, 2026, at the age of 78. Jerry will be remembered by family members, friends, and others whose lives were connected in meaningful ways. He was predeceased by: his former wife Kathryn Newman Oates; and his parents, Ermine Oates and James Oates. He is survived by: his son Bo Oates (Carin); his fiancée Helen Guarnieri; his grandchildren, Abigail Oates, Jackson Oates, Madison Oates and Stefan Burkhalter (Katie); his great grandchild Holland Oates; his siblings, Ted Oates (Lynn) and Janelle Studdard; his nieces, Cooki Gilbert (Rusty) and Melissa Fuller; and his former wife Patti Trotter. He is also survived by other extended family members and friends.
Visitation was held on Saturday, September 12th 2026 at 10:00 AM at the Evangel Church (5350 Veterans Pkwy, Columbus, GA 31904). A memorial service was held on Saturday, September 12th 2026 at 11:00 AM at the same location.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Total Terrain Wellness or Columbus Hospice in Jerry's memory to support patients and their families.
