He was predeceased by: his parents, Mary Nell Avant (Hines) and Ralph Avant; his son John Sentell Avant, Jr.; and his grandsons, John Sentell Avant, II, Robert Patton Avant and Henry Lanier Avant.
He is survived by: his son George Lanier Avant (Leigh); and his sisters, Ann Avant Crichton and Ellen Avant Donaldson.
