He was predeceased by: his son Brian Walter Johnson; his parents, Walter F. Johnson, Sr. and Marjorie Carnathan Johnson; and his cousins, Dr. James H. Johnson, Jr. and William Morris Johnson.

He is survived by: his wife Emily Waldrep Johnson; his daughter Stacey Johnson Stone; his son-in-law David Stone; his grandson Cameron Stone; his sister Nancy Johnson Coburn (Roland Coburn); and his niece Ginger Fennell.
