He was predeceased by : his parents, Loyd Evess Mathews and Pauline McCannon Mathews. He is survived by : his wife Pamela Fortson Mathews; his children, Clayton "Clay" Mathews (Satilla) and Elizabeth "Beth" Shelnutt (Rayburn); his brother Douglas Mathews; and his grandchildren, Joe Travis "JT" Mathews and Khloe Shelnutt. He is also survived by his extended family and close friends.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Crawford Baptist Church or Summit Ridge Hospital in Lawrenceville, GA.
