He was predeceased by : his parents, James Thomas Smith, Sr. and Myrtle Evelyn Taylor Smith; his wife Martha Faye Aycock Smith; and his brothers, Norman Neil Smith and Frederick H. Smith.

He is survived by : his children, Evelyn Southall of Carnegie and Steven Ray Smith (Maria) of Indialantic, FL; his siblings, Lydie S. Anderson of Elijay, GA and John Hull Smith of Pensacola, FL; and his grandsons, Gustav Ray Smith and Christopher Adam Southall (Evie).
