He was predeceased by: his parents, Chester Bates and Agnes Thompson Bates Brock; his grandparents, Matthew Thompson, Bertha Hicks Thompson, William and Estell Bates; his father-in-law Manuel Worley (Athelee); and his siblings, Wallace Bates (Mary) and Shelda Johnson (Evon).

He is survived by: his wife Judy Bates; his sons, Lesley Bates of Dalton and Jeremy Bates (Sally) of Dalton; his siblings, Dennis Bates of Cullman, Ala., Jan Brock of Cullman, Ala. and Beverly Bates (Marlin) of Cullman, Ala.; his grandchildren, Cassidy Blansit (Taylor), Kelsey Holmes (Trevor), Caitlyn Bates, Deanna Bates (Taylor Masters), Jamie Rose and Gabriel Bates; his great grandchildren, Namoi Seigler and Oliver Blansit; and his pets, Malorie, Callie and Biscuit. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews.
