He was predeceased by: his parents, James Elbert and Lottie Christol Hayes; his sister Beta; his brother-in-law J. W. Greenwood; his brothers, James Alec Hayes (Virginia), Daniel Lee Hayes and Gerald Hayes; and his son-in-law Joe James.

He is survived by: his wife Joyce Dillard Hayes; his children, Benny Hayes (Adina Walker), Beth Dolan (Pete), David Hayes (Judy), Susan Hayes James and Robert Hayes; and his grandchildren, Joseph James and Peyton Hayes. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
