He was predeceased by: his parents, James Betz and Leona Boldt Betz; his wife Shirley Gegus Betz; and his siblings, Elvin F. Betz (Phyllis) and Irene Betz.
He is survived by: his children, Richard James Betz (Betty Jo) of Griffin, GA, Kathy Lynn Johnston (Jimmy) of Canton, GA and Gary Michael Betz (Holly) of Concord, GA; his grandchildren, Richard James Betz (Destiney), Joshua James Johnston (Katelyn), Benjamin Charles Johnston, Kelli Michelle Betz Bannister (Andrew) and Ashley Betz Walters (Tracy); his great grandchildren, Mercy Betz, Hadley Johnston, Sophia Johnston, Sawyer Bannister, Stetson Bannister, Logan Walters and Haleigh Walters; and his sister Patricia Ryan (Thomas) of Corryton, TN.
