He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Elijah Thomas "Tom" Mathis and Martha Sue Raley Mathis; his siblings, Lamar, Harry, Tommy and Ruby; his former wife Vera Ann Usry Mathis; his children, J. Keith Mathis (Jan), Michael T. Mathis (Angie) and Kimberly Kaye Mathis; his grandchildren, Jessica Tudor (Corbin), Natalie Raines (Cole), Jake Mathis, Raine Mathis, Mac Mathis (Barbara), Annie Mathis and Mary Ann Mathis; his great grandchild Stevie Ann Raines; his sister Daisy Chalker; his wife Jane B. Mathis; his stepchildren, Derek Barron and Donnie Barron (Stacy); and his stepgrandchildren, Caitlyn Barron, Isabella Barron, Marissa Tyson and Piper Brown.
