He was predeceased by : his parents, Charles C. Thornton Sr. and Ethel Quarles Thornton of Hartwell, Georgia.. He is survived by : his wife Susan; his son Craig (Lane); his grandsons, Calloway and Davis Thornton; his daughter Claire (Timothy); his sister Gloria Eaves (Bill Eaves) of Belton, SC; and his mother-in-law Louise Ayers of Hartwell, Georgia..

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to benefit others.
