He was predeceased by: his parents, Major Guy Nelms and Lola Garrison Nelms; and his siblings, James "Jimmy" Nelms Sr. and Helen Tanksley. He is survived by: his wife Sara Stringer Nelms of Athens; his children, Amy Nelms of Athens and Jay Nelms of Athens; his grandchildren, Jordan Self-Nelms, Cameron Watt, Ethan Bailey, Jayci Nelms and Emily Bailey; and his sister Joan Whitehead of Bishop.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 1st 2025 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Evans Funeral Home (1350 Winder Hwy, Jefferson, GA 30549). A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 1st 2025 at 3:00 PM at the Chapel of Evans Funeral Home (1350 Winder Hwy, Jefferson, GA 30549). A burial will be held on Wednesday, October 1st 2025 at the Crooked Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
