She was predeceased by: her parents, Willie H. Spears and Ollie Bell South Spears; her former husband Samuel A. Gaines; her son Hugh Alexander Gaines (Rebecca); her husband James V. Smith; and her brothers, Howard Spears and Hugh Spears.

She is survived by: her daughters, Susan McGraw Thurman and Dianne Kolakowski (Dan); and her sister Betty Goolsby. She is also survived by five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Saint Judes Children's Hospital.
