He was predeceased by: his parents, William Sanford Mathews and Frances McCommons Mathews; and his sister Jackie Mathews Johnson. He is survived by: his wife Barbara Bingham Mathews; his sons, Jeff Mathews (Cristy) and Matt Mathews (Lisa); his grandchildren, Witt Mathews, Maddie Mathews, Ryan Mathews and Abby Mathews; and his siblings, William Sanford Mathews II and Betty Mathews Parris. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Wounded Warrior Project, or that those wishing to honor De's memory simply spend time creating something with their hands or making a lasting memory with someone they love.
