He was predeceased by: his father Brock Shafer; and his grandparents, Henry of Lilburn, Ruby Shafer (Johnson) of Lilburn, Alvis of Lilburn and Arles Pursell (Spruill) of Lilburn.

He is survived by: his mother Sandra Shafer (Pursell) of Lilburn, GA; his sister Beth Shafer Orr of Onslow, IA; and his nephews, Brock Orr (Maddy) of Cascade, IA and Brandon Orr (Kate Stith) of Onslow, IA. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and beloved friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the American Heart Association or the National Kidney Foundation.
