He was predeceased by: his parents, Willie Braxton and Monteen Roberts Purdy; and his brother James Purdy. He is survived by: his wife Barbara McKerley Purdy; his children, William Purdy (Cindy), Ricky Dale (Teresa), Janice Bredow (Roger) and Karen Dunaway (Dewey); and his sister Jane Ellen Bates. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
