He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Millard Carter and Nell Williams; his former wife Mary Elizabeth "Betsy" Hales; and his wife Janet. He is survived by: his daughter Amy; his grandchildren, Carter Uren, Davis Uren, Barrett Roberson, Austin Carter, Jr., Jack Carter, Henry Carter, Jude Emory Carter and Caroline Chadwick; his sister JoNell Horne; and his caregivers, Kimberly Patterson, Sandy Williams, Alexus Burnette, Tara Rozier and Cynthia Chambliss.
