He was predeceased by: his parents, Emmett Young Stokes and Alice Jewell McGee Stokes; and his sister Emily Bray. He is survived by: his wife Judy Cranford Stokes of Macon; his children, Kevin "Sean" Stokes and Kelly Stokes Griffith of Simpsonville; his granddaughter Chelsea Griffith Arrington (James Asbury Arrington); his great grandchildren, Emerald Neely Arrington and Griffith James Arrington; his brother E. Y. Stokes; and his pet Molly. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
