He is survived by: his wife Carol Smaha; his children, Katlyn Smaha, Paul Smaha, Jake Smaha and Josh Smaha; his siblings, Kim Smaha of Macon and Jason Smaha (Michelle); his nieces and nephews, Jason Smaha, Heather Smaha and Tori Smaha of Macon; his stepmother-in-law Jean Pong of Queens; and his brothers-in-law, Will Pong, Allen Pong and Jack Pong.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Polycystic Kidney Foundation, PO Box 871847, Kansas City, MO, 64187.

“I was one of Paul’s junior residents at The Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia. During the years we shared together at Temple University for medical school and then together at our residency, I came to know Paul as someone who—at times—could seem cock-sure and had the bona fides to back it up. Although this may be a sad statement of sorts, the majority of the things I learned during my residency were from Paul. Not my residency director….my senior resident. A good man. Pax.”
