He was predeceased by: his parents, Luther Heaton and Blanche Heaton; his former wife Mary Helen; his brothers, Luther Jr., Charles and Jake Heaton; and his great grandchild Bailey Morton.

He is survived by: his children, Joel Jr., Barbara Sue, Mary Elizabeth and Winnie Jane; and his wife Doris Lewis. He is also survived by four children, 8 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandson.
