He was predeceased by : his father Johnnie Legier Yates I (John); his former life partner Debbie Yarbrough; his daughter Jennifer Owen Yates; his wife Jennifer Yates; and his brothers-in-law, Steve Payne and Craig Mitchem.

He is survived by : his mother Verla Snelling (Taylor) of Crawfordsville, IN; his children, Jessica Yates and Johnnie Yates of Jacksonville, FL.; his stepdaughter Mandy Williams (Zack) of Monroe, GA; his sisters, Tammy Anders of Easley, SC, Tina Payne and Tracy Haslam (Jim) of Crawfordsville, IN; his brother-in-law Dave Yarbrough (Michelle); his parents-in-law, Helen and Carl Yarbrough; and his grandson Wyatt. He is also survived by 6 nieces, 2 nephews, and several great nieces and nephews.
